The jar test. Spin off your water-separating fuel filter and pour the contents into a clear glass jar. Let it sit for a minute. If you see water droplets settle to the bottom, or a dark, cloudy layer separating out, you have found contaminated fuel and ethanol phase separation. This happens constantly here when a downpour floods a poorly sealed gas cap, or when ethanol pulls moisture out of our humid air overnight.
Note the details. Write down the exact RPM where the bog starts and whether the engine recovers when you ease off. That information is gold to a mechanic and can cut diagnosis time in half.

If you have to run E10, treat every fill-up with a quality marine fuel stabilizer or enzyme treatment to fight moisture. Try not to let fuel sit for long stretches, and keep your tank topped off when the boat is idle to cut down on the air space where condensation forms. Replace your water-separating fuel filter on a regular schedule rather than waiting for it to clog, since it is one of the cheapest parts on the whole boat.
One firm rule, never put E15 in a marine engine. It is illegal to use in recreational boats under federal law, it will damage your fuel system, and it voids your engine warranty. Stick to marine-rated or Rec 90 fuel.
