Every engine that comes across our bench as a mobile marine mechanic in Fort Myers has a story behind it. Some roll in for routine service before the season heats up. Others show up because something already went wrong out on the water. This post walks through a set of real jobs we recently completed for boat owners across Southwest Florida, with photos from the actual work, a plain explanation of what was wrong with each engine, and exactly what we did to put it right.
At Island Marine Repair LLC, all of this happens dockside, at your home lift, or wherever your boat sits. No hauling to a shop, no waiting weeks for a bay to open up. Here is what that looks like in the real world, one job at a time.
Why a Mobile Marine Mechanic Handles This Work Dockside
There is a reason more Southwest Florida boat owners are moving away from drop-off shops. Most homes on the canals have a lift right behind the house, and pulling a boat off that lift to trailer it across town is a hassle nobody wants. A mobile marine mechanic brings the tools, the diagnostic gear, and the common parts straight to the boat. Routine service, fuel system work, cooling system repairs, and even pulling a cylinder head can all be done on site.
The jobs below run the full range, from a simple preventive service to a torn-down powerhead. Every one of them was completed in the field, in the same saltwater environment the engine actually runs in.
Job 1: 2012 Yamaha 250 With a Debris-Damaged Piston
This one was not a routine service. A piece of debris found its way into a cylinder on a 2012 Yamaha 250, and once something hard is bouncing around inside a running engine, it does not take long to chew up a piston. Left alone, that kind of damage kills compression in the affected cylinder and can take the whole powerhead down with it.

We pulled the affected piston to get eyes on the damage, then removed both cylinder heads to clean everything out and make sure no debris was left hiding in the cooling passages or the combustion chambers. The damaged piston was repaired, the cylinder cleaned up, and the engine was carefully reassembled and checked over before it went back on the boat.

A job like this is where honest diagnosis earns its keep. Some shops would quote a full powerhead replacement on the spot. By taking the time to open it up and trace the damage with proper marine engine diagnostics, we saved this owner from a far bigger bill and got the engine running right again. A short video of this teardown is on the way.
Job 2: Yamaha 115 Full Service
Not every job is a rescue. This Yamaha 115 came in for a full service, the kind of preventive maintenance that keeps a smaller outboard reliable through a hard Florida season. In our saltwater and heat, skipping service is how small problems turn into stranded-on-the-water problems.

A proper service on an engine like this covers the oil and filter, the gear lube in the lower unit, the fuel filter, spark plug inspection, anode check, and a full look over the cooling system and connections for early signs of corrosion. This is the same complete outboard boat service we run on engines of every size, scaled to the motor in front of us. Done on schedule, it is the cheapest insurance a boat owner can buy.
Job 3: Yamaha 250 SHO Full Service and Cooling System Refresh
This Yamaha 250 SHO came in for a full service, and the cooling system told the real story of how hard Southwest Florida is on an outboard. Up on the lift with the cowling off, we worked through the complete service and turned our attention to the thermostats and poppet valves.

When we pulled the old thermostats, the difference between old and new said everything. The originals were scaled up and crusted with the mineral and salt buildup that clogs cooling components down here. A thermostat in that condition cannot open and close the way it should, which leads to overheating and the kind of engine damage that gets expensive fast.

We replaced the thermostats and poppet valves, cleaned up the housings, and finished out the rest of the service. This is bread-and-butter Yamaha outboard repair work, and it is exactly the kind of thing that gets missed when cooling parts are left in service too long.

Job 4: Twin Yamaha 300 Full Service With Lower Unit
Twin engines mean twice the maintenance, and this pair of Yamaha 300 outboards came in for a full service that included dropping a lower unit for a proper inspection. Twins take a real beating in the canals and the Gulf, so keeping both engines on the same service schedule is the only way to keep them running as a matched set.

Pulling the lower unit lets us change the gear oil, inspect it for the milky look that signals water intrusion, and check the seals and gears before a small leak turns into a rebuild. Catching a failing seal early is the whole point of lower unit and gear case service, and it is far cheaper than replacing a gear set that has already run with water in it.

For boat owners running twins on a canal home, we handle this work right at the lift. Plenty of these jobs are mobile boat repair in Cape Coral, where trailering a big twin-engine boat is the last thing anybody wants to do.
Job 5: Twin Mercury 300R Full Service and Fuel System Cleanup
This Sea Cat came in running twin Mercury 300R outboards for a full service, and the fuel system is where the Florida environment showed itself again. We worked through the complete service on both engines, then turned to the boat’s fuel and water separating filters.

The old fuel and water separating filters had been in service too long, and it showed. Corrosion and rust staining on the canisters is a warning sign that water has been sitting in the fuel system, which is exactly what our humidity and ethanol-blended gas cause down here. Filters in that condition stop protecting the engine and start becoming a problem of their own.

We replaced the filters and cleaned up the system so both engines get clean, water-free fuel. This is core Mercury outboard repair maintenance, and on a big offshore boat with twin 300s, a fuel problem at the wrong moment is not something you want to gamble on.

Job 6: Twin Yamaha 300 Full Service
Another set of twin Yamaha 300 outboards, another full service done on the lift. Cowls off, both powerheads gone through top to bottom, and every service item checked so the owner can head offshore without second-guessing the engines.

Running twins is a commitment, and the engines reward consistent maintenance with years of reliable service. Keeping both motors on the same schedule means they wear evenly and you are never nursing one tired engine while the other pulls the load.
Job 7: Yamaha 150 VST Cleaning and Filter Replacement
This Yamaha 150 came in for a vapor separator tank cleaning and filter replacement, and it is one of the most satisfying before-and-after jobs we do. The VST feeds the high-pressure fuel pump, and the small filter inside it is a classic hidden failure point on Southwest Florida boats.

With the VST out and opened up, the condition of the old filter said it all. The used filter had gone from clean white to a stained, gummy brown, packed with the varnish and residue that ethanol fuel leaves behind. A filter in that shape chokes the high-pressure pump and starves the engine, which shows up on the water as bogging and a loss of top-end power.

The comparison between the old brown filter and the new white one is night and day. We cleaned out the VST, installed a fresh filter, and got the fuel system flowing the way it should. This is the heart of our fuel injector and VST cleaning service, and on an engine that has been drinking ethanol fuel for years, it can bring back power the owner did not even realize they had lost.

Job 8: MerCruiser 8.1 Spark Plug and Belt Replacement
Not everything we work on is an outboard. This MerCruiser 8.1 sterndrive came in for a spark plug and belt replacement, the kind of tune-up that keeps a big inboard running smooth and prevents a breakdown from a worn belt letting go at the worst possible time.

Worn spark plugs cause misfires, rough idle, and lost power, and the old plugs we pulled showed their miles. Lined up next to the fresh set, the difference in the electrodes and the color made it clear they were overdue. Fresh plugs and a new belt restored smooth, confident power to this engine.

A belt that snaps on the water can leave you drifting, and a plug that fouls can turn a good day into a tow home. Staying ahead of both is simple, affordable maintenance that pays for itself the first time it keeps you off the phone with a tow service.
What All of These Jobs Have in Common
Look across these eight jobs and the same theme runs through nearly every one. Saltwater, heat, humidity, and ethanol fuel are constantly working against your engine in Southwest Florida. Corroded thermostats, rusted fuel filters, a varnished VST filter, and even the debris that took out that Yamaha 250 piston all trace back to the demanding environment we boat in.
The fix is not complicated. Consistent service, honest diagnosis, and quality parts keep these engines alive far longer than the neglect that leads to overheating, fuel starvation, and stranded boats. Whether it is a single 115 or a set of twin 300s, the engines that get looked after are the ones still running strong years down the road.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you really do all of this at my dock?
Yes. Full services, cooling system work, fuel system cleaning, spark plug and belt jobs, and even pulling a cylinder head can all be handled on site at your lift or slip. A mobile setup brings the tools, diagnostic gear, and common parts to the boat, so most jobs are completed without ever trailering the boat to a shop. Only major rebuilds or work that requires specialized shop equipment need to leave the water.
How often should I service my outboard in Southwest Florida?
Most manufacturers call for service every 100 hours or once a year, but our saltwater and heat are hard enough on engines that many local owners service more often. Flushing after every saltwater trip, checking anodes monthly, and keeping up with annual service is the baseline. Engines that run a lot, or sit for long stretches between trips, benefit from tighter intervals.
My engine bogs at full throttle but idles fine. Is that the VST?
It very often is. A clogged VST filter or a fuel system restriction starves the engine right when it demands the most fuel, which shows up as bogging at wide open throttle while low speed runs fine. A vapor separator tank cleaning and filter replacement fixes this in many cases. The only way to know for sure is a proper dockside diagnosis under load.
Why did old thermostats and filters cause problems if the engine still ran?
Parts like thermostats and fuel filters fail gradually, so the engine keeps running while the protection quietly disappears. A scaled thermostat cannot regulate temperature, which leads to overheating, and a saturated fuel filter stops catching water and debris. By the time symptoms show up on the water, the damage is often already underway, which is why replacing these parts on schedule matters so much.
Do you work on both Yamaha and Mercury?
Yes, along with other major brands. The jobs above include Yamaha outboards from 115 up to twin 300s, twin Mercury 300R outboards, and a MerCruiser 8.1 sterndrive. Different brands have their own systems and common failure points, and knowing those differences is a big part of getting the diagnosis right the first time.
